SSL

An SSL certificate is a digital certificate used to authenticate the identity of a website and enable encrypted connections. SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, a secure protocol that creates an encrypted link between a web server and a web browser. Companies and organizations need to add SSL certificates to their websites to protect online transactions and keep customer information private and secure.

SSL - Frequently Asked Questions

Q
What is an SSL certificate? What is a CA agency?
A

SSL is an acronym for Secure Socket Layer. SSL certificates have two main functions, authentication and data encryption. An SSL certificate can authenticate the identity of an enterprise or website. When users visit a website, they can click on the website security certificate and trust seal to learn the specific information of the website and identify the authenticity of the website. In addition, the SSL certificate can also enable HTTPS encryption to protect the personal information entered by users on your website, ensure that privacy-sensitive information is not illegally tampered with, and prevent the leakage of transmitted information. CA authority is the abbreviation of Certificate Authority, which is the certificate authority. Since the CA is a third-party organization responsible for managing and issuing digital certificates, its role is to check the legitimacy of the certificate holder's identity and issue a certificate to prevent the certificate from being forged or tampered with. It can be understood in this way that the CA agency is similar to the public security bureau that issues ID cards to citizens. So, not all companies can be called CA. At present, the authoritative CA companies mainly include CFCA, Sectigo, Geotrust, Digicert and so on.

Q
How long is the SSL certificate valid for?
A

In 2020, the CA/B Forum initiative will limit the maximum validity period of SSL certificates to one year. Since then, CA agencies have followed industry standards for many years, and successively adjusted the validity period of SSL certificates to 398 days at the end of August 2020. Although the validity period of SSL digital certificates is shortened, in order to help users reduce the risk of certificate interruption and certificate expiration, Ruicheng Information provides a multi-year SSL certificate subscription model, which can support the purchase of SSL certificates for 1-6 years. There are discounts for multi-year SSL certificate subscriptions, which not only reduce business costs, but also simplify the certificate renewal process.

Note: After subscribing to a multi-year SSL certificate, we will send the SSL certificate valid for one year to the user in batches. Before the certificate expires, Ruicheng will send a new certificate to the user in advance, and the user only needs to replace it.

Q
Why apply for SSL certificate verification?
A

The purpose of users applying for SSL certificates is to implement HTTPS encryption on the Internet, protect website information security, and prevent website information from being hijacked and tampered with; corporate users need more identity authentication to prevent corporate information from being used by people with other people’s hearts, and at the same time, allow visitors to Browse, use, trade, and more with confidence on its website. To gain the trust of browsers in the Internet industry, it is not possible to achieve with any HTTPS certificate. Therefore, this requires a publicly trusted CA agency to verify the domain name ownership of the applicant. For example, if applying for an OV/EV SSL certificate, it is necessary to cooperate with the enterprise to verify that the applicant is real and valid before issuing an SSL certificate. For specific certificate verification methods, see the SSL certificate application document.

Q
Why can't I use the email address and phone number provided by myself for verification when applying for an SSL certificate?
A

This is because the email or phone number provided by oneself cannot be proved to be owned by the personnel of the applicant unit. It may be that criminals pretend to be personnel of other units to apply for a certificate for phishing websites. Therefore, the domain name verification CA agency can only approve the administrator's mailbox or Whois registered mailbox to complete; enterprise verification is completed through the telephone or mailbox queried by the third-party authoritative platform (generally, the company's annual report, 114 and other platforms).

Q
A

After purchasing an SSL certificate on the INTERNET DATA platform and completing the verification, the CA will issue this certificate. We will send you the certificate file package by email, and you can also log in to the Ruicheng platform to download the certificate. The downloaded certificate package contains certificate formats used by web servers such as Nginx, Apache, Tomcat, and IIS, and can be installed without conversion.
